Otitis Media and How to Treat it

A middle ear infection, sometimes called otitis media, happens when bacteria or virus cause the inner ear to swell. This condition is more common in infants. Acute otitis media usually comes on very quickly and is characterized by fever, headache and pain in the ears.

Earwax buildup is one of the first signs of middle ear infections. If your child has frequent earaches and if you notice a yellow or brownish discharge from the ears, there may be an infection in the middle ear. This is another reason why it is so important to visit your pediatrician regularly for a thorough checkup. Your doctor can examine your child's ears and order tests to determine the cause of middle ear infections and treat them accordingly.

The ear, especially the inner ear, is the subtle part of your body that provides sensory feedback to your brain that controls balance, coordination, and balance. If a sensitive part of the body becomes irritated or infected, it can damage your hearing.

Common causes of middle ear infections include ear infections with ear mites, ear infections with strep throat or ringworm, and ear infections caused by a blocked Eustachian tube. It can be difficult to diagnose. They cause pain and fever, but usually do not cause hearing loss.

Otitis media is a common ear infection that can occur anywhere on your child's body, including the face, neck, and back of the head. This is especially common among babies. Babies with middle ear infections are more likely to get otitis media in other parts of the body, such as the mouth and abdomen.

Otitis media is treatable. Treatment includes antibiotics, antiviral drugs, or natural remedies. Antibiotics help stop bacteria from growing and relieve pain. Antiviral drugs help prevent bacteria from spreading into the bloodstream, which can further weaken the immune system.

Some antibacterial medications work well in children; others don't

You can start by taking one or two antibiotics, either alone or in combination. to get rid of the infection. If the symptoms persist, you can take antibiotics in addition to another treatment.

If the symptoms don't improve with the first treatment, you can take a series of antibiotics in conjunction with other treatments. If the antibiotic medications don't work, your child's doctor may recommend surgery. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor and to follow all instructions carefully.

If the antibiotics aren't working, your child may need an ear reconstruction to correct problems with deformities caused by common ear infections, such as misshapen ears, protruding ear drums, tumors, fluid buildup and/or scarring. Otitis media may also lead to sinusitis, which is an inflamed and painful swelling of the upper respiratory system caused by the bacterial infection.

In the meantime, your child can begin treating their ear infection naturally. Many parents find relief with homeopathic remedies for their child's ear infections. There are several types of earwax, which can help soothe, heal and disinfect, or cleanse the affected area. Be sure to talk to your child's physician about any changes in treatment options.

Homeopathic remedies for otitis media include soothing ointments or drops

Ear drops containing peppermint oil, tea tree oil, calendula and/or alfalfa are effective in reducing pain and inflammation. You can also find creams and ointments that contain chamomile, lavender and/or clove oil, which also help.

Other herbal remedies can help as well, including eucalyptus oil, lavender tea, milkweed and/or calendula. A steam bath can also provide relief and healing, and will also help prevent bacterial infection. If none of these options work, you can use garlic capsules, which have been known to reduce swelling and pain.
